In January of 2008 I bought a plane ticket to Dublin, Ireland for August 7. My intention was to spend five weeks travelling in Scotland before starting graduate school in philosophy at KU Leuven in Belgium. Well I never made it to school, but I had the ticket (and had convinced a friend, Ian, to buy one too) so I made a trip of it. It was my first international adventure and has given me the travel bug. The total cost for the trip, including all transportation, food, accommodations, and frivolities was around $2500. Here is the Gear List for my 10 week trip. Scotland Trip Report and Gallery August 8th-September 9th, 2008 After a single day in Dublin, Ian and I spent two days in Edinburgh and then traveled to the west coast (via Glasglow). We then departed from the mainland for a 15 day tour of the western islands. We visited Arran, Kintyre, Islay, Colonsay, Oban, Mull, Iona, Barra, Eriskay, South Uist, Benbecula, North Uist, Skye, Harris, and Lewis. From Stornoway we crossed to Ullapool (O, how I love thee) where we stayed for five days, traversed some of the highlands and hiked the Great Glen Way. We climbed Ben Nevis and then visited Aberdeen and St. Andrews before returning to Edinburgh. Here is aphoto album of some of my favorite photos from my time in Scotland. I've divided the travelogue into the following subpages:
After Ian left me at Edinburgh I went down to the Lake District. I spent 13 days hiking through the Lakes, Yorkshire Dales, and North Yorkshire Moors down to Scarborough in northern England. I then went to London for four days where I spent the days in museums and the nights in the theater. I spent a week walking through Kent down to Dover, and finally ended my trip in the west of England with a stop in Bath and an 11 day walk of the English-Welsh border.
